About the Client

The Akessa Healthcare Group manage outstanding medical facilities, and needed to bring them all into alignment, while retaining their individuality. They were looking for a modern, flexible design that could be re-worked for each of their properties, without having to compromise on content or UX.

The challenge

In design, providing editorial flexibility can restrict your ability to design something truly unique, and with Akessa, the design needed to be flexible enough to work for multiple websites, whilst retaining their unique character.

Flexible design

As well as having unique brand identities, each website needed to provide for slightly different users, with different requirements. For example, The New Foscote Hospital needed to highlight their in-house MRI and scanning facilities, and The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital has a dedicated Neuro & Spinal Rehabilitation Centre.

So we needed a solution that was customisable enough to enable these unique user journeys without losing the connection between the different websites.

Design systems

Early in the planning stage, we decided that the best option for this would be a design system. This would enable us to create styled blocks and elements that could be re-used across all three websites.

This prevented us from needing to create original layouts for each website individually, and saved a lot of duplication of effort.

Key Feature

Gutenberg

Wordpress’ modular design system was the obvious choice for this project, enabling us to re-use layouts across multiple websites, but customise them to each hospital’s unique branding and colours.

Gutenberg also ensures that Akessa can expand and update each website easily, building new pages from pre-designed blocks. It’s a fantastic balance of usability and customisation.

Unique graphical elements image

Unique graphical elements

To keep the balance between consistency and contrast, we introduced unique graphical shapes for each website.

We created a unique graphic for each hospital that could be used throughout their design, a diamond for Foscote, hexagon for Royal Bucks and a circle for Harley Street.

These flourishes bring texture and interest to the different sections of the website, and despite being different, are visually similar enough to show the connection between all three as well.

The Outcomes

The Akessa Group now have three high-performing websites that show their connection whilst remaining unique. And by basing the websites on a core modular design system, they have been able to do it at a fraction of the time and cost of 3 stand-alone projects.
